Questions for Part I of Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows"

Answer the Following questions:
1.       Describe the setting of Algernon Blackwood’s “The Willows.” Where and when does the story take place?



2.       After reading section “I” of “The Willows” what would you say the mood of the story is? What words, or textual evidence support your claim for this?




3.       Describe the relationship between mood and setting in the story. How does one contribute to the other?



4.       In a literary piece, a motif is a recurrent image, idea, or symbol that develops or explains a theme, while a theme is a central idea or message. Pertaining to this short story, specifically in the manner in which nature is portrayed, repeatedly, in part “I” of “The Willows,” what would you say is the reoccurring motif we see being developed in the story. Hint, it has to do with how nature is repeatedly portrayed.
I.E. The following passage is an example where we see can see an instance of motif regarding nature in the story:

We had made many similar journeys together, but the Danube, more than any other river I knew, impressed us from the very beginning with its aliveness. From its tiny bubbling entry into the world among the pinewood gardens of Donaueschingen, until this moment when it began to play the great river-game of losing itself among the deserted swamps, unobserved, unrestrained, it had seemed to us like following the grown of some living creature. Sleepy at first, but later developing violent desires as it became conscious of its deep soul, it rolled, like some huge fluid being, through all the countries we had passed, holding our little craft on its mighty shoulders, playing roughly with us sometimes, yet always friendly and well-meaning, till at length we had come inevitably to regard it as a Great Personage.




5.       There are many examples of foreshadowing in the story, even in Part “I”. Write two examples of foreshadowing in Part “I” of “The Willows.”


6.       Read the following passage from part “I” of “The Willows.” Just by reading these two paragraphs, themselves, what would you say is the theme of the story?
“Great revelations of nature, of course, never fail to impress in one way or another, and I was no stranger to moods of the kind. Mountains overawe and oceans terrify, while the mystery of great forests exercises a spell peculiarly its own. But all these, at one point or another, somewhere link on intimately with human life and human experience. They stir comprehensible, even if alarming, emotions. They tend on the whole to exalt.
 With this multitude of willows, however, it was something far different, I felt. Some essence emanated from them that besieged the heart. A sense of awe awakened, true, but of awe touched somewhere by a vague terror. Their serried ranks, growing everywhere darker about me as the shadows deepened, moving furiously yet softly in the wind, woke in me the curious and unwelcome suggestion that we had trespassed here upon the borders of an alien world, a world where we were intruders, a world where we were not wanted or invited to remain -- where we ran grave risks perhaps!”






7.       How does the writer build tension in the story? Think about the things the two travelers need to worry about that make their river trek dangerous and mysterious.





8.       How effective does the setting contribute to mood? What else creates mood in a story?
“The eeriness of this lonely island, set among a million willows, swept by a hurricane, and surrounded by hurrying deep waters, touched us both, I fancy. Untrodden by man, almost unknown to man, it lay there beneath he moon, remote from human influence, on the frontier of another world, an alien world, a world tenanted by willows only and the souls of willows. And we, in our rashness, had dared to invade it, even to make use of it! Something more than the power of its mystery stirred in me as I lay on the sand, feet to fire, and peered up through the leaves at the stars. For the last time I rose to get firewood.”

Vanguard, Today April 5th, 2018

How do you feel about where Vanguard Academy is today? Some of you have been attending Vanguard Academy since you were in elementary and you've grown alongside the school. In other words, you've witnessed and experienced the changes Vanguard has experienced. From principals, superintendents, teachers, buildings, programs, organizations, events... etc. Even if some of you have only been part of Vanguard Academy for a few years, you can still acknowledge changes from this year to the last. Return of the Blog Assignment 3/27/2018




Life in 2018 is pretty different from life in the the 80’s or even the 90’s, for that matter. I’m not saying people have ceased to go outdoors to bike around their neighborhoods or play sports outside the way many of you still do. I suppose what I really want to get to, is that the internet changed the way many of us spend our free time. I’m sure many of you still venture outside, but it’s also true many of us, today, still find ourselves spending a lot of our free time online. That being said, I want you to reflect on the internet. Yes, when used inappropriately, it can be a true time-waster, however, it is also true  the internet can also grant us plenty of opportunities to further inform us, to enlighten us, and to give us some solid entertainment. Yes, the 80’s were cool, but so are things in cyberspace in 2018.

Your assignment is as follows:
 Your next blog article will be about you sharing some of the best things, in your opinion, that the internet offers. Speaking for myself, I don’t think I explore the internet very differently from the way I explored it in the last 10 years. Therefore, what I want to get at, is that your assignment will be to share 7 things the internet has to offer that you feel are truly special, interesting, and worth our time. 

You will post the following in your blog:

Two people worth listening to online (could be their YouTube channel or podcast or etc…)

Two websites worth checking out frequently

Two apps you feel are essential today

Finally, one place you believe does a good job of getting the news and helps you stay informed without resorting to heavy bias and or fake news.

This is what your next blog will be about. Your assignment is not merely to list these things and leave them be. Your job will also be to write a short piece for each (150 words) where you will explain why these people/websites/apps are worth our time. I’d really be interested in discovering new things to explore in the internet, and I’m sure your peers might discover some truly great recommendations. You will need to include pictures, links and maybe videos for each one as well. Anyways. That’s your assignment. Do it!

February 16th Journalism Assignment

This assignment will count as a test grade! Although you can start on it today, the article needs to be posted by Monday, February 19th. Furthermore, this is the last week of the 4th 6 weeks.

Although some of you have been doing a good job managing and contributing to your blogs, some of you have not. You know who you are. I have decided to try something a little bit different for this last week of the fourth six weeks.

Your assignment will be as follows:

You will write a reflection piece concerning the unfortunate, but alarming, shooting incidents occurring in schools throughout America. These incidents aren't normal occurrences in other countries, and yet-- they're becoming quite frequent in America.

For this assignment, I want a serious tone.

I'd like for every member of each blog-- or, all journalism students-- to reflect on this important, yet sad topic. Write about the factors you believe are contributing to the rise of these unfortunate incidents. You can retrace the past and see where this tragic trend started, and where things are now. Feel free to do some research, if you have to, but your post is not a research paper. Write about how you feel about these incidents and how you believe we, as a country, can help alleviate these incidents from occurring in the future. From the actions of individuals, to ways our society can help remedy this crisis, reflect on moving forward positively. This will be a reflective post.

Thus, reflect on how where this all started. Reflect on the factors that lead to these unfortunate tragedies, reflect on American culture, reflect on possible solutions to remedy our present and our future, reflect on what this says of our country as a whole.  

This will be two test grades for Journalism class. Thus, I am asking for 800 to 1,000 words for this post.

Some of your blogs and posts are not where they need to be and your journalism grade reflects this. Remember, in order to particpate in clubs and organizations here in school, you must be passing all of your classes. If you want to pass this class, you need to start working and start taking this seriously.

Aside from writing your article today, you also need to select 4 other peer blogs, check what they have done in their blogs, and write comments based on their postings. For example, if the blog is interested in reviewing things from entertainment, you can offer suggestions for something they'd like to review, something you'd recommend, and or something you appreciate from their post. You can help give your peers ideas. Anyways, the point is that you will look over a minimum of four other blogs, read their stuff, and write back something. Anything. But this will be a part of your grade.

After that, you can continue writing your article.

2) Make sure others are able to access your blog.   15 pts. 
     (I've tried some of these urls, and they're not taking me to your blog... check your settings)
3) Have your classmates visit and subscribe to your blog by the end of the class period. 15 pts.
4) Every member of the group must post a 200 word count entry describing, in detail, what your first writing assignment will be in your group blog. For instance, make sure you make clear what your group envisions the purpose of your blog to be.  Remember,  EVERYONE MUST write and post. So, let us know what you will be writing about. 40 pts.
5) Along with your first post, make sure you also post an image to accompany your message. 15 pts.
6) Make sure you write your working url for your blog in the board.

Journalism Groups

Journalism

Students will be grouped in each class period and assigned a particular blog most suited to their interests. This has been done for you already. No switching, no whining, no nothing. That being said, attention was given to try and group you with people you'd get along.

1. Each group will be responsible for creating their own blog.  You must use BLOGGER.

2. One of the things you must do is to come up with your own url. Try and go for something that is short, easy to remember, and hopefully ties with the theme of your blog. 

3. Each group will name their own blog. You must come up with a unique and memorable name fir your blog. This is a must. Also, the name must reflect what the blog is about.

4. EACH group MEMBER will WRITE and SUBMIT blogs. There will be no exceptions. Failure to do so will mean you will fail this class.
 
5. You will NOT be able to CHANGE your group.

6. Once you create your blog as a group, you will go to SETTINGS and add authors to your blogs. This will enable your group members to manage the blog, too, and add their blog entries.  

7.Once you finish with all of this, you will write the website link you created to visit your blog in the board, along with the names of all the students participating in it, and the name of the blog

8. Finally, you will be allowed to edit the look of your blog.

9. Before leaving the class, you will need to add yourself, or register yourself to other students' blogs.

10. Finally, you must also add yourself to my journalism blog. It is here where I will be posting writing assignments, deadlines, or add things that may help you in your blog writing.

Vanguard Academy Journalism

I've created this blog for our journalism class. Rather than settle for a a regular journalism class, I-- along with other motivated students-- feel this is a a good opportunity to try and do something different with journalism. In effect, this means everyone will actually be writing, posting, and publishing articles. Although the purpose of your assignments will range, learning about modern forms of journalism works best by actually having students writing and sharing their work to others. As a journalism teacher, I HAVE TO COME UP WITH WORK AND ASSIGNMENTS FOR THIS CLASS. I NEED TO HAVE GRADES FOR YOU ALL. I believe this approach to class can actually make this class more interesting, more engaging, and more FUN, actually. Your primary audience will be your teacher and your fellow, senior classmates; however, as these BLOGS are open to others in the internet, basically anyone online might stumble on your writings and musings. What better way to participate in a journalism class than by writing and participating in it yourself. Some of you will be interested in contributing to certain publications (blogs) more than others, while some of you will have to be assigned to contribute to specific blogs. Some of you will be responsible to run the blogs, yourselves. Either way, you will be earning your grades by writing, reading, thinking and contributing. So, be positive about this. I can always go back and teach journalism in a traditional sense, or, I we can embrace this approach to class and make the most of it. One thing is for sure, if you are not writing or contributing, you will not be passing. You work will never be lost because it will appear in the blogs; furthermore, if you are not participating, it will clearly appear in the blogs, as well.
